Several months on, the Luka Doncic trade continues to draw criticism from all sides. One former NBA coaching legend is angry and has made it known, intending to send a message to the Mavericks very soon.
Trading Luka Doncic to supposedly get closer to the title? Nico Harrison’s justification doesn’t convince many people in Dallas, even less so when the franchise has gone from the NBA Finals with the Slovenian to missing out on the playoffs. So yes, the Mavs will have to rely on Cooper Flagg in the future, but the disappointment remains immense.
By improving this roster once again, perhaps Dallas would currently be in the NBA Finals against the Pacers, desperate to win the title. But we’ll never know. This decision to trade Doncic remains highly unpopular with the web, and even with former franchise members. Such is the case of legend Don Nelson.
Mavericks tackled again for their decision
Nelson knows the Mavericks well, having served as coach and GM from 1997 to 2005, and is one of the NBA’s winningest coaches. So it’s fitting that he was honored this weekend with the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to a legend each year. And Nelson had just what he needed to say.
He took the opportunity to talk to reporters about a number of subjects, including the infamous Doncic trade. A former Dallas player, Nelson was the first to criticize the front office’s decision, believing that they shouldn’t get rid of great players. Clearly, he wouldn’t have done the same thing in Texas.
Don Nelson sur Luka Doncic : “He’s a close friend. And to protest the fact that he was traded from the Mavericks to Los Angeles, I’m going to wear a pair of his new shoes, I wanted to mention that. My philosophy has always been that when you have a great player, he’s yours and forever. You don’t get rid of great players. When it happened, I was very disappointed.”
