Two-time NBA champion with the Rockets, Vernon Maxwell has also left his mark on NBA fans with his repeated outbursts. Now a regular contributor to the American media, he recently commented on the funny news about Victor Wembanyama.

His nickname “Mad Max” sums up his personality quite well. An avant-garde player who helped the 3-point shot become more widely used in the NBA, Vernon Maxwell wasn’t just known as a shooter. His strong character earned him a reputation as a sometimes unmanageable player, even in a franchise as tight-knit as the Spurs. All of which left an indelible mark on the league.

A key figure in the history of the NBA, Maxwell now enjoys a certain notoriety, which allows him to take on an occasional role as an analyst. In fact, he sometimes dissects league news alongside Stephen Jackson on Unplugged. The latter recently spoke about the new viral project of Victor Wembanyama, who has left for a spiritual retreat on the coast of China:

Stephen Jackson: When I saw that, I didn’t know if it was true or not. But as a Muslim, I respect him and I know what it’s like to contemplate his inner self. I know what it’s like, that’s what he’s doing and it’s important to do it. When you grow, and even more so when you start to find success, you have to look to keep growing and do it the right way.

Most people change, but not all for the better. And as the Bible says, from whom much has been given, much will be required. So I think it’s a good thing he’s taking such an initiative.

An opinion shared by Vernon Maxwell, who uses the examples of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon to support his point:

Vernon Maxwell: I myself have seen Kareem and Olajuwon fast for Ramadan, things like that, and I feel that immersing oneself in such introspection can only be beneficial. Of course, everyone has their own religion, but I think it’s a blessing for him to embark on a spiritual quest like this at such a young age.

I have no problem with that. On the contrary, I think it can only make him a better player and a better person than he already is. So kudos to him.

As you’ll have gathered, Wemby’s puzzling decision is unanimously supported by the two veterans, and is reminiscent of those taken by other legends of the circuit. It remains to be seen whether it will enable him to reach similar heights in a few years’ time.
