Announced as one of the main candidates for the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer, the Spurs would nevertheless be better off passing up the opportunity. At least, that’s the contrarian view put forward by a former member of the league.
Like every year in the NBA, the transfer market is likely to be in turmoil as the Draft approaches. It remains to be seen whether this period will bring some clarity to the Giannis Antetokounmpo story. Possibly on his way out of the Bucks, the Greek winger is reportedly still pondering his future. Even if the rest of the league is under no illusions as to his final decision.
Giannis Antetokounmpo rejected by the Spurs?!
Difficult to read since its inception, the Giannis dossier remains the source of numerous rumours. Several teams, including the Spurs, are said to be in a good position to acquire him via a trade. However, Austin Rivers believes that it would be in the Spurs’ interest not to sign the Greek Freak, even if he explicitly asked to join San Antonio. He explains in his podcast Off Guard:
Austin Rivers: If I were them, I’d refuse and say, “We thank you for your request. We’re big fans of you, you’re one of the best strong wingers of all time, we love your tenacity, your dedication to basketball, your leadership, your values… Everything you stand for. But your current ambitions don’t match up with the current progress of our project.”
According to Rivers, the Texan franchise already has enough weapons to fight for the title sooner or later with Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox… and Stephon Castle, among others:
Austin Rivers: Stephon Castle hasn’t even had time to show off his skills and talent yet. And yet, he’s been voted Rookie of the Year.
He wasn’t even his team’s #1 option offensively, and he was struggling against other rookies who had that role on bad teams! He was voted Rookie of the Year on talent alone. The Spurs already have a superstar with Wemby, they’ve got Fox, they’ve got this little kid and on top of that, they’ve got the 2nd pick in the Draft… Yo, let it all develop. They already have everything they need!
Moreover, Rivers believes that the potential arrival of top-prospect Dylan Harper in the San Antonio backcourt would not represent any concern:
Austin Rivers: I don’t mind it. Did you see Nembhard and Haliburton play in Indiana? Shai and Jalen Williams in OKC? You can have multiple ball handlers on the same team. If they’re really good, it’s not a problem!
