Rumors have been circulating for weeks about Kevin Durant’s arrival in San Antonio. But according to analyst Bill Simmons, the deal has been closed for a while… and the franchise is simply waiting to announce the news.
This summer promises to be a particularly intense one for the Spurs. After a significant improvement in 2024-25 (12 more wins than the previous season) and with Mitch Johnson confirmed as the new head coach, the franchise will continue to build around Victor Wembanyama. De’Aaron Fox arrived before the last trade deadline, but more is needed for the team to take a decisive step forward.
The good news is that the Texans have plenty of leverage to negotiate with other franchises. Between two draft picks in this year’s Top 15 and several young and promising players, there’s enough to make for an extremely attractive trade. The question remains whether this will allow them to secure the services of a superstar… like Kevin Durant, for example.
Bill Simmons convinced Kevin Durant will join the Spurs
For weeks, San Antonio has been among the top likely destinations for the winger. In addition to being Victor Wembanyama’s favorite player, his experience and scoring prowess would allow him to form a terrifying partnership with the Frenchman. In fact, Bill Simmons says it’s only a matter of time before the franchise announces… that it’s already agreed to terms with the superstar:
I wouldn’t be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven’t announced it. Basically, they’ve agreed on specifics, just announce it on the week of the draft. This goes back to the Giannis thing. I think they trade for KD because it just costs less.
They’ll be able to be real competitive and maybe go a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but they’re also going to keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way, which is my prediction.
Of course, there is no evidence to support the analyst’s theory. However, he seems sincerely convinced that this hypothesis is well-founded.
In other words, Phoenix has already been seduced by San Antonio’s offer, since nothing can be done without the agreement of the Suns, with whom KD is still under contract. One thing is certain: the Spurs will have to sacrifice a lot to land the two-time NBA champion, and a key player on the roster could pay the price.
