Before a third person one day joins the debate, and why not Victor Wembanyama, LeBron James and Michael Jordan are the two most credible candidates for the title of GOAT in the NBA. The Lakers’ superstar is the favorite of a generation that has always seen him at the top of his game, while the Bulls’ #23 relies on the support of the older generation.

The King has exceptional longevity on his side: if he doesn’t retire this summer, he’ll become the only player in history to have played in 23 seasons. What’s more, he’ll consolidate his lead in the scoring charts, which is no mean feat. And with Luka Doncic on his team, one last title is not out of the question.

Toni Kukoc rules in favor of Michael Jordan

As for Michael Jordan, what often comes to mind is his immaculate record in the NBA Finals, with 6 rings and 0 losses. He also had an impressive mentality that gave him a mystical side. Invited on Stephen Brun’s show on RMC, legend Toni Kukoc was asked about the subject. After expressing his weariness, he gave a pretty clear answer:

I’ve spoken to millions of people, and one of the first questions I’m asked is who, LeBron James or Michael Jordan, is the GOAT. The other question is what it’s like to play with Jordan. It’s not the same era, so it’s hard to compare. But when you think of GOAT, you think of titles, of the man who makes you win, of the greatest competitor.

Who’s the player who wants the ball on every possession? If you take these factors into consideration, Michael Jordan is the greatest player in history. I have no doubt that he is the player I have described. But you can’t denigrate LeBron’s style of play. He always plays for the good of his team. With Jordan, you could see in his eyes that you had to give him the ball.

For Toni Kukoc, Michael Jordan represents the imagination of the best player in history. He always wanted the ball to make a difference and lead his team to the title, which he did on 6 occasions. He was also the one who hated defeat the most, and his teammates could see it. In this case, LeBron James seems to have been punished for his selflessness and sense of the beautiful game.
