Highly ambitious in the West, the Spurs are already dreaming of reaching the playoffs next season. But to do so, they’ll need to recruit, whether in defense or… shooting. A serious problem dating back to 2022.

With Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and the likely drafting of Dylan Harper, the Spurs don’t want to miss out on the playoffs for 2026. The Texans will clearly be in it to win it, but so will every team in the Western Conference. Competition will be fierce and having “only” a good roster won’t be enough for the postseason.

So we’re expecting some changes in San Antonio in the future, starting with the upcoming draft. Dylan Harper is expected to be selected second overall, while the 14th pick could be traded in the coming weeks. It has to be said that the Spurs have gaps in their squad, and not just on defense.

The big problem for Spurs since 2022

Because even if Wembanyama is there, the defense can do better in San Antonio. But perhaps the number 1 priority is to recruit one or more shooters. Many fans are hoping that Cam Johnson will once again be followed by the franchise, as he could do some good. Nevertheless, and according to Kevin O’Connor, the problem may run deeper.

Having lost a valuable member of staff a few years ago, Spurs are struggling with their shooting. Even average players struggle to improve, and Jeremy Sochan is a perfect example. And yet, with Wembanyama needing space in the racket, it’s certainly a major problem.

Kevin O’Connor : “It helps to recruit Chip Engelland. In 2022, the Thunder picked up one of the most respected coaches when it comes to shooting, all after two decades in San Antonio. Since then, Oklahoma City has improved its shooting. San Antonio has fallen apart. Jeremy Sochan is as suspect a shooter as when he was at Baylor. Keldon Johnson has regressed. Devin Vassell has fairly fluid mechanics, but he didn’t exceed 40% from three-point range. The Spurs were the benchmark in shooting.”

Today? This is no longer the case for the Spurs, who are among the poor performers. With Victor, however, it is essential that the players progress, or else recruiting will be an obligation. The front office’s top priority this summer?
