Stephen Curry has already had a chance to make up his own mind about young Dylan Harper, before meeting up with him again next year as an NBA opponent. And it would appear that the Spurs-bound American prospect has made a lasting impression on him.
With the eagerly-awaited draft just two weeks away, the NBA transfer market is set to get busy. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, many trades could be concluded in the coming days. The Spurs, who inherited the 2nd pick in the traditional Lottery, could be part of the action.
Given its lofty ambitions, the Texan franchise seems likely to sell this valuable asset in order to lure another established star into its fold. On the other hand, they could keep it in order to acquire yet another young talent with great potential. In this case, Dylan Harper, who proved his worth a few months ago with a certain… Stephen Curry.
When Dylan Harper impressed Stephen Curry
An admirer of Steph’s shooting skills, Harper was able to admire them up close during the summer of 2023, as part of his participation in Curry Camp. Accompanied by a host of other top prospects, he teamed up with his talented NCAA teammate Ace Bailey. Both caught the eye of the Warriors’ star point guard, who declared seven months later in a press conference:
Stephen Curry: Those two are obviously very talented individually speaking, but talent isn’t enough to take you all the way to the top. In the NBA, people also want to know how much you can still improve, how hard you work, whether you’re manageable for your future coaches… And they’ve both shown what they’re made of. Especially Dylan.
It was funny because he defended me on a few actions and I might not have scored a point against him. I think he was wearing a microphone at the time and he knew. He took my stats into account and treated it like a real matchup. That’s the kind of competitiveness we love, because these young players are there to improve.
Muffled by his young counterpart, the Chef appreciated the latter’s competitive spirit and seriousness. In his opinion, these are all qualities which are of great importance in the NBA, and which enable newcomers to earn a lasting place in the game. Harper seems destined to be a long-term fixture in the league, and why not in San Antonio?
