Victor Wembanyama recently moved to China as part of his off-season, and he’s not content with just sightseeing. He has embarked on a spiritual retreat with monks, and is following a very precise schedule.
Since the discovery and announcement of the deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, his news had been limited to questions about his health. Logic would have dictated that this phenomenon would continue into the off-season. Victor Wembanyama, however, decided otherwise, and has been in the news lately for his activities in China. Activities about which precise information was scarce.
After discovering and walking the Great Wall, the French interior decided to get away from the usual tourist circuits. He even embarked on a spiritual retreat with local monks, adopting some of their customs in the process. And it has to be said that this initiative is not all plain sailing, contrary to what some fans might think.
Victor Wembanyama’s highly regulated schedule in China
Journalist for FOX San Antonio, Dusty Garza recently offered news of Wembanyama via his X account :
Dusty Garza: Victor Wembanyama takes his spiritual retreat very seriously and doesn’t want to be disturbed. His public appearances are rare, although monks have taken photos with him and obtained autographs from him. Tourists, for their part, leave him alone for the most part.
Keen to stay under the radar as much as possible, the Tricolor international is not taking advantage of this to take it easy away from the cameras and the hustle and bustle. Far from it:
Dusty Garza: I’m told that “Shaolin Wemby” wakes up every day at 4:30 a.m. and has occasionally been spotted near the Bodhidharma Grotto and on temple paths.
His morning training usually takes place inside the sacred site, while his lunch takes place off-site. Around 5 p.m., he jogs again before his evening class.
While many of his counterparts – especially the younger ones – take advantage of the summer to sleep in, Victor wakes up at the crack of dawn.
Further proof, if any were needed, that he is fully committed to this unusual project. In fact, it’s hardly surprising, given that he’s always fully committed to everything he does, both inside and outside basketball. All that remains is to hope that all this will bring him the benefits he’s looking for, be they sporting or simply personal.
