Just under a year before her French Open triumph, Coco Gauff arrived in Paris for the Olympic Games, hoping to bring back gold for her country. Although she was quickly defeated, she still has fond memories of LeBron James, the other flag-bearer of the American delegation.
Last week, American Coco Gauff won the French Open for the first time in her career, knocking off world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Although the success was somewhat marred by the loser’s acerbic comments, the 21-year-old still enjoyed the victory. In particular, she found herself drunk in Paris.
In short, back in the States, she is now treated like a true superstar by her compatriots. She receives a standing ovation every time she appears in public, as was the case, for example, during her appearance at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, for the match between the Liberty and Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky. After a disastrous Olympic Games last summer, with an early elimination from the tournament, Coco Gauff finally got her revenge on the French capital. She now has another excellent memory in Paris, in addition to the opening ceremony. Flag-bearer alongside LeBron James, she looked back on this suspended moment and the King’s aura for ESPN.
During the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, LeBron and I were both so into it. We were so excited about carrying our flag. That’s how you know LeBron is an icon. You had a tide of Olympians, the best in their discipline, and everyone got out of his way. He was like Moses facing the Red Sea. He exuded this untouchable aura.
Coco Gauff was impressed by LeBron James at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. The King may have behaved like any other athlete on the American delegation’s boat, but his status caught up with him. Upon seeing him arrive, everyone stepped aside to make room for him, as if he were a prophet. Even Jordan never had that honor.
