As the 2025 draft approaches, the Spurs are the subject of many speculations surrounding their second overall pick. Among the rumors, a trade with the Suns to acquire Kevin Durant recently stirred up the social media networks. But a clear statement has been made regarding the real direction of the Texas team’s project.

The presence of Victor Wembanyama naturally leads some to imagine bold moves to accelerate the Spurs’ rise in the near future. The idea of bringing in a superstar like Kevin Durant quickly surfaced, but reaching an agreement with the Suns will not be easy at all—especially with that valuable second pick.

San Antonio continues to favor patient team-building, in line with what the management has done in the past. The front office, led by Brian Wright, remains focused on developing young talent, notably Wemby and Stephon Castle. Dylan Harper could soon join this core group.

False Alarm for the Spurs?

Trading their second draft pick for a veteran like Durant would contradict this vision. The player’s age (soon to be 37), salary, and career trajectory do not align with the Spurs’ project, especially after missing the playoffs this year. Everything points to the franchise planning to use their pick to select Harper and not rushing to acquire a star—at least not with this asset.

We also know the Sixers have contacted the Spurs; currently holding the third position. The franchise wants to move up in the draft and negotiate with the Texans, but according to some sources, it’s just due diligence. Close to the franchise, Don Harris made a categorical statement on Twitter:

Don Harris: “There’s a HUGE gap between Dylan Harper and the picks going 3rd, 4th, or 5th. The Sixers can try whatever they want. Unless they give up Tyrese Maxey, it’s ridiculous. The Spurs will take Harper. Period.”

With Wembanyama as the cornerstone, the idea of building a young, complementary duo with Dylan Harper clearly appeals to the management—alongside Castle. There’s no question of deviating from this path despite doubts. The statement is clear: the Spurs will keep their pick, ignore outside temptations, and remain faithful to their long-term vision.
