After another season in the depths of the Eastern Conference, the Wizards are looking to continue their rebuilding. In particular, they’re hoping to get the nod at the Draft… and would like to pick up a prospect to pair with Bilal Coulibaly.
Absent from the playoffs since 2021, they still seem a long way off. However, the Wizards are in no hurry to do things right as they rebuild. The first steps they have taken in recent months are encouraging enough for their fans, who are particularly enthusiastic about young French talent Bilal Coulibaly.
A new sidekick for Bilal Coulibaly at the Wizards?
Equally satisfied so far with Coulibaly’s development, Washington’s leaders must now determine how best to support him. According to the latest rumours, Jordan Poole could be sacrificed, and why not on the sidelines of the upcoming Draft. Indeed, this would perhaps enable the franchise to get its hands on the top prospect it covets, namely… V.J. Edgecombe:
Jake Fischer: Within the league, Washington is increasingly mentioned as a team that would be interested in moving up in the draft and picking up Edgecombe. It should also be noted that the Wizards currently hold the #6 and #18 picks in the first round, making them a potential trade partner for Philadelphia and Charlotte in the eyes of rival teams.
According to insider Jake Fischer, the Wiz’ are attracted by Edgecombe’s potential. However, it’s a safe bet that Edgecombe will be selected higher than the 6th pick. Most mock drafts project him at 4th or even 5th, forcing the capital franchise to mount a swap to obtain him. According to Joshua Valdez of ClutchPoints, the aim is to team him up with Coulibaly and wreak havoc:
Joshua Valdez: Edgecombe has the skills to excel as a 3-and-D player in the NBA. Measuring in at 1m96 and weighing in at 84kg, the freshman turned in 15 points per game with the Bears, shooting 43.6% and 34% from 3-point range, and totaled 20 counters and 68 steals over his 33 NCAA games. He would form a formidable defensive duo with Bilal Coulibaly on the perimeter if Washington were to acquire him.
It’s worth noting, however, that D.C. risks clogging up its back lines in the process. In addition to Poole, Brian Keefe’s backcourt has seen the emergence of several young talents in recent months, including Kyshawn George, Bub Carrington and AJ Johnson. Adding a prospect in this sector could therefore hinder the progress of some of them, which is obviously not desirable.
