Kevin Durant, who is leaving Phoenix, still doesn’t know where he’ll play next season. But a former NBA player remains convinced that the two-time champion would help a young star take a significant step forward.
Kevin Durant’s situation is strange, to say the least. We’re talking about a former MVP, who can easily average over 25 points even though he’s now 37 years old and suffered a major Achilles tendon injury a few years ago… and yet, the other 29 NBA franchises aren’t rushing to sign him, even though the superstar is expected to leave the Suns after the 2024-25 season.
On the other hand, not all the arguments are in favor of the Slim Reaper. Phoenix is already his second failure in six years, after having already missed his chance with the Nets. Since leaving Golden State, the two-time NBA champion has been unable to find his way back to the Finals. Worse still, his franchise missed the playoffs this season while he was at the helm… So, it’s not very reassuring, even in the short term.
Fortunately for him, some franchises are still showing interest. The trail leading to the Spurs hasn’t gone up in smoke yet, even though KD is known to be the favorite player of a certain Victor Wembanyama. We shouldn’t forget the Timberwolves either, according to former player Jay Williams, who would love to see the four-time Olympic champion play alongside Anthony Edwards next season:
Kevin Durant, the perfect mentor for Anthony Edwards?
I personally feel that the best fit is Minnesota. Number 1, it’s like Outlaws, right? It’s like Tupac and Snoop on the album cover; that is, Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant. USA Basketball was an incredible time for them. You saw their bond continue to mature. Anthony Edwards does not call any player in the world his favorite player ; he’s one of the most competitive dudes you’ve ever met, he’ll call KD that.
And Marc Lore, Alex Rodriguez, new ownership in Minnesota, if it’s a year deal, I would sign KD to an extension, because it helps Anthony Edwards get to that next level. He’s a superstar, but Anthony Edwards can become a supernova if he has KD by his side.
The scenario that would see Durantula become Rudy Gobert’s new teammate is very real in the eyes of many observers, even if it won’t be easy. If only because of the two-time Finals MVP’s oversized contract, which will earn him $54 million next year. This means that a lot of concessions will have to be made… or else the French center will have to be included in the trade, an option that has also been considered.
