The 2025 draft is fast approaching, and the Spurs are at the center of all the speculation. Dylan Harper is widely regarded as a top pick, especially for his offensive talent, but his selection by San Antonio is not guaranteed. And there’s a very specific reason for that.
Dylan Harper has impressed many scouts with his aggressive attacking of the rim, his court vision, and defensive versatility. These qualities make him a very interesting prospect in a competitive draft class. However, on a team that already has guards like Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox, Harper’s profile raises some questions.
The importance of outside shooting in today’s NBA is a factor the Spurs cannot ignore, especially with Victor Wembanyama, a star who needs space in the paint. Harper’s shooting, which is a subject of debate, becomes a major point of concern in evaluating his fit with the team.
Is Dylan Harper Not Yet Guaranteed with the Spurs?
Harper struggles with shooting consistency, particularly from three-point range, which worries some observers. Building a team around Wembanyama requires reliable shooters to space the floor and create offensive opportunities. This lack of shooting consistency could therefore be a hindrance for the Spurs.
Kevin O’Connor, on Twitter, believes it’s not certain:
Kevin O’Connor : “I watched all 104 of Dylan Harper’s misses at Rutgers and 24 of his misses either hit the backboard, air-balled or were blocked, while nearly one-third sprayed left or right. On catch-and-shoot attempts, 22.2% of his misses went left and 19.4% went right.”
O’Connor : “Harper is undoubtedly a high-level prospect because of his ferocious downhill attacking, playmaking ability, and potential defensive versatility. But concerns over his shooting do raise questions about the fit next to Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox when trying to build the ideal roster around Victor Wembanyama.”
This analysis highlights the challenge the Spurs face: choosing a player not only for his individual skills but also for his fit with the franchise’s overall strategy. Doubts remain about the guard, which could strongly influence their draft decision. A trade is not out of the question at this stage.
