As the offseason heats up with trade buzz, a major move could already shake the league in the coming hours. Kevin Durant, on the verge of leaving Phoenix, is expected to be traded before the end of the weekend. And despite weeks of speculation, the Spurs appear to be out of the running.
Though San Antonio had been linked to Durant for several weeks, the situation now seems clear: the Texas franchise is not among the frontrunners to land the star. According to Shams Charania, the Heat, Rockets, and Timberwolves have submitted their final offers to the Suns in hopes of reaching an agreement by the weekend.
This confirms a growing trend within the Spurs organization: a commitment to a patient rebuild around Victor Wembanyama. The front office seems more inclined to use its resources to gradually build a solid core rather than trading away major assets for a veteran with an uncertain long-term outlook. Durant’s age (37) is likely a significant deterrent.
Shakeup Coming for the Spurs?
The 2025 draft remains a top short-term priority for San Antonio. Holding the second overall pick, the Spurs could use it to select promising guard Dylan Harper—or leverage it in a trade to strategically strengthen the roster. But it’s clear the team is not looking to drastically alter its lineup in the immediate future.
