The Spurs are showing clear determination ahead of the 2025 draft: they absolutely want to keep their second pick to select Dylan Harper. And given the latest rumors, this saga might soon be over.
Recently, Dylan Harper visited the Spurs’ training facility, a visit that only strengthened the bond between the player and the organization ahead of the 2025 draft. After the meeting, he returned to his home state, New Jersey, but the Spurs’ intention remains clear: to keep him and integrate him into their roster next season.
Harper is seen as a potential key piece to accompany Victor Wembanyama, bringing complementary skills to the Texans’ game. San Antonio appears ready to defend their pick and not be swayed by other offers or rumors about a possible draft trade, despite significant interest. The Sixers have notably expressed interest.
Spurs ready for the 2025 draft
However, the Spurs also hold the 14th pick, a valuable asset that could be used as leverage in potential negotiations. This positioning recalls the strategy adopted during last year’s draft when they traded the 8th pick to the Timberwolves to strengthen their squad. The Texans might do the same again.
Brandon Robinson : “Hearing the Spurs have only brought in one lottery pick for a workout — Dylan Harper. He visited their facility earlier this week and returned to NJ yesterday. I’m told San Antonio wants him at No. 2. The Nets are interested too.”
This insider info confirms the Spurs’ intention to secure Harper for now. Meanwhile, the 14th pick could be a valuable asset to finalize a trade that would further strengthen the team, just like last year. Stephon Castle was chosen in the top 4, while the 8th pick (now Rob Dillingham) ended up with the Wolves.
With this strategy, San Antonio shows it wants to bet on its young talents to build a solid team around Wembanyama while keeping room to maneuver in the trade market this summer. But with De’Aaron Fox and Castle, some wonder if Harper remains the best option.
