According to the latest information from Shams Charania, the Spurs are no longer among the favorites to acquire Kevin Durant on the open market. However, an ex-partner of the Slim Reaper seems to think that this could finally be a good deal for them.

One day’s truth can be very different from the next in the NBA. While the Spurs seemed almost destined to get their hands on Kevin Durant, things have changed in recent hours. In any case, Shams Charania claims that other franchises now seem to be better placed in this dossier, which is obviously causing quite a stir in San Antonio.

Kendrick Perkins reassures Spurs about Kevin Durant

Convinced that their team would welcome Durant sooner or later, many Spurs fans are now disappointed. The split in the Texan fanbase is proving to be a real one… but for some, it’s not necessarily for the best. Kendrick Perkins, for example, is among those who believe that the star winger is no longer a guarantee of success in the title race. He explains in Road Trippin’ :

Kendrick Perkins: Based on the latest information, Durant is going to get traded before the draft, or possibly on draft night. Until then, I’d like to send a message to the teams that are really looking to get him: “proceed with caution, okay?” Because in my eyes, Kevin Durant is no longer THE player who will help a franchise win a title by landing on its roster.

I’m not making this up, these are just facts. When you look at the Brooklyn Nets, his stint remains one of the biggest busts in NBA history, with the Big Three he formed alongside James Harden and Kyrie Irving. Then, with the Phoenix Suns, the same thing happened. Another disappointment with another Big Three. And let’s not forget the two champion coaches who were fired in the process, Frank Vogel and Mike Budenholzer.

A two-time champion with the Warriors, KD has since failed to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy. His attempts have even ended in abject failure, despite the superteams in which he has found himself. As a result, Perkins doesn’t necessarily seem to understand the hype surrounding him on the market. He therefore warned more specifically… the Knicks, who are also mentioned in this story:

Kendrick Perkins: If you’re the Knicks and you’re serious about drafting Kevin Durant, you better find the right coach that he’s going to respect. Except I don’t know which coach that might be, given that they seem intent on scooping up all the coaches from other teams already on the job who aren’t accessible, which is bizarre and malpractice on their part.
