As he approaches his 40th birthday, LeBron James is still showing no signs of wear or fatigue on NBA floors. He may, however, decide to bid farewell to the league and join… another, if a famous journalist’s hunch is to be believed.
Despite the small number of games played each night at the moment, NBA news is relatively busy. In addition to the breathless clashes between the Pacers and the Thunder, fans are fascinated by a host of transfer and free agency rumours. So it’s not easy for them to keep up with all the latest news, and even harder not to miss out on information on related issues.
And yet, in addition to these news items closely or remotely linked to the courts, there are others that should be noted. Over the past few months, the NBA has been carrying out a number of more global and far-reaching projects. These include a possible future expansion with the creation of two new franchises, as well as the establishment of an alternative league in Europe. All this, while also having to be wary of possible future competition.
Is LeBron James about to overshadow the NBA?
Like the WNBA, which now has to contend with the presence of a major new women’s league called Unrivaled, the NBA is running a similar risk. A group of investors would like to replicate this scheme on the men’s side, with a colossal budget of $5 billion. In his podcast, the influential Bill Simmons also said he expected to see… LeBron James get involved :
Bill Simmons: The people behind this new league claim that several major stars will be joining it. And not just any stars. And knowing that Maverick Carter is one of the people trying to set it up, or at least promote it, it seems pretty clear that he must be implying that LeBron will be one of those stars joining the project.
Charged with advising the famous investors on their company, Maverick Carter is none other than LeBron’s childhood friend and business partner. He could therefore use his close relationship with the King to convince him to join him and lend credence to this XXL project. All the more so given that the Lakers’ leader’s future in the NBA remains a source of uncertainty.
At least, that’s what Simmons anticipates, according to whom LBJ’s profile would tick the boxes of the aforementioned sought-after stars:
Bill Simmons: Could Kevin Durant also be involved? In any case, my guess is that they’ll be famous superstars whose careers are coming to an end, and who would accept in exchange for a big check and shares in the league.
