As Shai Gilgeous-Alexander established himself as one of the NBA’s top players, members of his family gradually found themselves in the spotlight. Like his father, Vaughn, who was guilty of a lunar outing.

As the 11th pick in the 2018 Draft, he was somewhat out of the spotlight when he arrived in the NBA. However, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has gradually been able to turn the spotlight on him. Barred from the Clippers, he took off for Oklahoma City and has no regrets about it today. Quite the opposite, in fact, as he has established himself as a true star in the Thunder ranks, culminating in this season’s MVP award.

This symbolic coronation naturally brought great joy to those closest to him and his family. His father, Vaughn, was particularly elated, as he has always considered him to be the most deserving of the candidates, notwithstanding Nikola Jokic and his fans. What’s more, this spotlight on his son allowed him to take center stage himself… at his own peril.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s father’s big slip

A recent guest on the 520 Club, Vaughn Alexander discussed fatherhood with one of the podcast’s hosts, Jeff Teague. The father of a young daughter, however, revealed that she was far from displaying the same qualities as him, ball in hand. And even though he didn’t seem to mind, his guest took the liberty of suggesting a controversial solution to raising a good basketball-playing child:

Vaugn Alexander: Give me your girl so I can breed her. I guarantee that with my genes, she’ll give birth to a great basketball player!

An outburst which, unsurprisingly, provoked both hilarious and somewhat embarrassed reactions on the show’s set. Teague, who was directly concerned, gave a brief response that reflected the slight discomfort:

Jeff Teague: Nah, you can’t say that Pop! OG, I’m gonna keep showing you respect, but you can’t say that!

After a few seconds, during which the 50-year-old continued his speech with similar remarks, he ended by saying that it was just a joke. Not enough, however, to spare himself the criticism.

After discovering this footage, many Internet users described Vaughn Alexander as disrespectful, even egocentric. Others denied his assertion, pointing out that Thomasi, his second son, is nowhere near as successful as Shai on the basketball planet. The reigning MVP, for his part, will no doubt be able to skilfully dodge the subject should it be brought to his attention, so as not to damage his image.
