While the Giannis Antetokounmpo option seemed to be closing, the Kevin Durant option remained open to the Spurs. However, the latest information from Shams Charania on this matter has divided the franchise’s fans.
Given their lofty ambitions and numerous valuable assets, they seemed well placed to make a big splash on the summer transfer market. It was therefore logical that the Spurs were included among the most serious candidates for a Kevin Durant arrival. The problem was that they weren’t the only team interested in the winger-star… and may well have fallen behind.
Big debate on the Kevin Durant case within Spurs Nation
Seemingly well-informed on the Kevin Durant soap opera since its inception, Shams Charania has offered new indiscretions on the subject in recent hours. And if we are to believe him, San Antonio is no longer among the favorites to welcome the Slim Reaper. The information obviously didn’t escape the notice of Zach, a fan of the franchise and writer for the media outlet Pounding The Rock, who almost gushed about it on X:
@ZachNBA_: People getting upset that the Spurs are supposedly no longer in the battle to get KD are hilarious. As if San Antonio didn’t put together a trade to lure an All-Star caliber back, what’s more in his prime, less than FIVE months ago. When will people learn their lesson? The Spurs never make bad trades.
Based simply on this message, it would seem that the Spurs have been put off by the Suns’ demands. This could, after all, explain why they no longer appear to be one of the most plausible drop-off points for KD. However, if they had indeed backed out of this deal, they would have made a big mistake, according to other, much angrier fans:
@EB21122: Oh goodie. The Spurs still aren’t a playoff team. KD would have made sure they were. But hey, no big deal given that they’ll be drafting players and we’ll keep hearing those c about “development” and that “you shouldn’t skip steps”. After all, it’s only been 11 years since they were champions, so we can wait another 11 years.
@GervinTwittiot: I’ll try to remember that when Minnesota or Houston picks him up in exchange for Gobert or Jalen Green. Which will equate to more losses for the Spurs, by the way.
@15Pieman: The Spurs made the worst trade in history 7 years ago (Kawhi Leonard to Toronto, ed.) and now have a roster that makes no sense.
