A trade is brewing behind the scenes, and it could shift the balance of power in the league. Kevin Durant, in search of a fresh start, has reportedly made his decision behind closed doors… but the outcome remains as uncertain as ever.
According to the latest information from Shams Charania, Durant’s departure is imminent. Several teams are vying to acquire the superstar, but three franchises stand out: the Miami Heat, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Houston Rockets. What do they have in common? They’re Durant’s preferred destinations—places where he’s willing to commit long-term.
For the Spurs, this represents a historic opportunity. Pairing Kevin Durant with Victor Wembanyama would create a formidable duo, capable of drastically accelerating the rebuilding project the team has been pursuing for several seasons. However, there’s no clear sign that San Antonio is ready to part with major young assets to land him—and that’s the issue.
Fierce battle for Kevin Durant
Houston, on the other hand, boasts a young, explosive roster already structured around talents like Jalen Green. Adding Durant could elevate the Rockets into serious championship contention. The same logic applies to Miami, which has been seeking to add another superstar alongside Bam Adebayo for years. Still, trade demands could stall negotiations.
Shams Charania : “The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant’s preferred trade destinations out of Phoenix, sources tell ESPN. Those across the NBA have been made aware in recent days that those are the three teams that Durant would commit to long-term.”
However, despite Durant’s preferences, the Phoenix Suns don’t seem eager to do him any favors. The front office is focused on securing the best return possible, regardless of what the player wants. As a result, other teams—ones not on Durant’s shortlist—could enter the race. Some might be willing to gamble, even without long-term guarantees.
One way or another, the resolution is near. The NBA Draft takes place on June 25, and many teams are aiming to finalize a deal before then. Once again, Kevin Durant is set to shake up the summer—and potentially the entire upcoming season.
