Many have shared their thoughts on how the Spurs should build around Victor Wembanyama. George Gervin is the latest to weigh in — and he may have just cooled all of San Antonio on one specific idea.
George Gervin, known as “The Iceman,” knows the Spurs’ foundation better than anyone. Observing Victor Wembanyama’s growth, the legendary scorer spoke out about the direction San Antonio should take in the coming months. In his view, the priority shouldn’t be acquiring aging stars through a blockbuster trade.
With the Spurs reportedly among Kevin Durant’s preferred destinations, the franchise is reflecting. Should they sacrifice young players or draft picks to land a superstar in his 30s — still dominant but approaching retirement? Gervin seems to advocate instead for patience and internal development.
What’s the right strategy for the Spurs?
George Gervin : “They [the Spurs] got a good nucleus to put something together. You all know, just like how I know, the old era is gone. No LeBron, no Steph, no Durant. They got the young fellas now… Everybody is going to be an ex-player one day,”
This sentiment echoes that of many observers who remind us that Wembanyama is only 20, and the project has room to grow over several seasons. Bringing in a veteran star could accelerate things in the short term, but might also stunt the development of the younger players — and ultimately go against the very identity of the franchise.
Behind the scenes, some executives are reportedly drawn to the idea of building like they did during the Tim Duncan era: a solid, loyal core developed in-house. That formula helped the Spurs dominate for years. Betting on prospects like Jeremy Sochan or Stephon Castle might not be such a wild gamble, even with the appeal of a player like KD.
Nothing has been decided yet — not by the Suns, nor by the Spurs. But the further the talks progress, the more San Antonio seems reluctant to include some of their young talent in a potential Durant deal. Maybe Gervin just said out loud what the front office is already thinking.
