An All-NBA Team member at the age of 40, LeBron James never ceases to impress with his longevity at the highest level. And if one of his young Lakers teammates is to be believed, he’s certainly not done yet, crazy as that may sound.
For years now, his detractors have been eagerly awaiting his retirement. But just like the rest of his career, LeBron James has no intention of satisfying them anytime soon. Still active at the age of 40, the Lakers star remains among the best players on the circuit. His recent selection for the All-NBA 2nd Team is proof of another remarkable season.
Indeed, the King has not usurped his place in this cast, who was still turning in 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists in recent months. All this in a team that has made it into the Top 3 of the tough Western Conference. Once again, observers may wonder when this longevity, unprecedented in the history of the league, will come to an end. But they may have to be patient.
LeBron James still (very) far from retirement?!
With a player option for next season, LeBron is likely to decline it in order to sign a new contract. This could allow him to continue his NBA career for another two years… or even longer. In any case, his young Los Angeles teammate Dalton Knecht suggested to TMZ that his leader still has plenty of gas in the tank:
Dalton Knecht: He told me he could play for another 5 or 10 years. So that means Bron and I could work together for another five or ten seasons. Why not?
As a reminder, LBJ will celebrate his 41st birthday this December. For his part, Knecht celebrated his 24th birthday last April and is only making his league debut, having landed with the Lakers in the 2024 Draft.
In other words, the two Angelinos are far from being from the same generation… but that might not prevent them from going a long way together. According to the rookie, it’s not impossible that they could remain partners for five years, or even a decade. This is thanks to Bron’s astounding durability, whose physique still hasn’t decided to let him go after 22 years at the highest level.
For this to happen, however, none of them will have to move on in the next few years. Knecht, however, appears to be a credible candidate for a trade, as he represents one of the few players of the future that his managers could exchange. James, for his part, could fail his franchise, and even the NBA, by joining a major new project, for example.
