In recent days, following a statement by Tracy McGrady, a debate has opened up in NBA microcosm about the best dribbler in league history. Kyrie Irving has responded, as he is the laureate of the vast majority of enthusiasts.
Kyrie Irving occupies a special place in NBA history. On an individual level, he’s far from breaking the bank, with Rookie of the Year and All-Star Game MVP his only major honors. Similarly, he was only selected to the All-NBA teams three times, proving that he was not often among the league’s elite.
Yet, in the opinion of those who saw him play in the 2010s and 2020s, Uncle Drew richly deserves his place in the Hall of Fame and will forever be a household name. For on the pitch, he has long been considered the best ball-handler in the history of the sport. Despite this near-unanimity, Tracy McGrady recently disagreed.
Kyrie Irving responds to Tracy McGrady
Jamaal Tinsley dribbled as well as Kyrie. Remember him? In fact, I don’t think anyone handled the ball better than he did, not even Kyrie. It’s debatable, but I don’t think I’ve seen a better dribbler than Jamaal Tinsley in the NBA. He was really strong and mastered the ball as if he were connected to it by a string.
Like all point guards from New York and surrounding areas, Jamaal Tinsley’s dribbling skills were undeniable. But was he a match for Kyrie Irving? During a recent stream, Uncle Drew looked at his own compilations to put an end to this debate, which isn’t really one. Fans obviously agree with him.
When I see a veteran like Tracy McGrady saying he’s never seen a better dribbler in the NBA than Jamaal Tinsley, not even me, I don’t mind. I’m a blend of all the great players who came before me. I wouldn’t be who I am if I hadn’t watched the old guys. I’ve just taken things to another dimension. On the other hand, I know Jamaal Tinsley didn’t move like I do.
Nobody moves like I do. I think I may have similarities with some people, that they’re more advanced on some moves… But I’ve built the foundations to teach the new generation how to keep the street aspect in today’s game. I play as if I’d grown up on the streets, and I have.
