With the Finals still underway, the Grizzlies have officially kicked off the off-season by surprisingly parting ways with Desmond Bane. Ja Morant was angered by the media coverage of the trade, prompting a stinging response from Stephen A. Smith.

When fans complain about the NBA’s current media coverage, they’re referring to the overemphasis on drama in the league. Indeed, tactics and strategy are rarely discussed; most discussions revolve around the latest rumors and controversies. For example, during these Finals, the Pacers and Thunder don’t occupy the airwaves.

What gets people talking as summer approaches are the situations of Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo, two superstars rumored to be on their way out. Experts are wondering where they’ll land, for what consideration, when they could be concentrating on the title series. The Grizzlies’ trade is also the subject of massive comment, which has seriously annoyed Ja Morant:

Stephen A. Smith lashes out at Ja Morant

The media is talking more about the Grizzlies than the Finals, and with sources that lie to boot. They could instead focus on the performances we’ve seen so far from Jalen Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, TJ McConnell and Pascal Siakam, on the dynamics of the series. Instead, we’re talking badly about a team and a city on national television.

That last sentence is a clear reference to Stephen A. Smith on ESPN this Tuesday. The star reporter claimed that many players refused to play for the Grizzlies because they didn’t feel safe in the city. Well aware of this, the star journalist was quick to respond via an interposed tweet.

So we’re going to play it that way, Ja Morant? I remember talking about the Finals on the air. The Grizzlies made headlines because they traded Desmond Bane. And your possible extension is coming up. Would you rather I talk about the mess going on in Memphis? Why players clearly don’t want to come to the franchise? Or would you rather I leave you alone and let the people of Memphis talk about it themselves? I’m listening, it’s your choice.

Stephen A. Smith doesn’t take kindly to people questioning his work, and this isn’t the first time he’s shown it. Faced with Ja Morant’s comments about him, the journalist decided to threaten him with supposed dossiers that could create instability in the city and in the franchise. Not the most ethical response.
