JJ Redick made his coaching debut in 2024-25 by taking over the Lakers’ roster. Having already worked with him on his podcast before that, LeBron James had plenty of time to observe him and recently drew a clear conclusion.

Was the Lakers’ 2024-25 season really that disappointing, despite their first-round playoff exit? Things need to be put into perspective given what’s happened in recent months. This includes the major management change made before the last trade deadline with the acquisition of Luka Doncic, which saw the franchise part ways with its best big man, Anthony Davis.

Coach JJ Redick and his staff therefore had to rethink the entire playbook within a few days, right in the middle of the season. No easy task, especially when the coach in question is a rookie. Overall, the former sniper’s debut on the bench turned out to be quite interesting and promising.

As a reminder, the Lakers finished third in the West with a record of 50 wins and 32 losses, while having the 10th best defensive rating in the league. There is still a lot of room for improvement, especially on offense (19th rating), but we must not forget that a lot has changed with the integration of Luka Doncic. LeBron James also gave his honest opinion on Redick to the Hollywood Reporter:

I think when it comes to podcasting specifically, not only being committed to doing it … but also just being very knowledgeable about the game, breaking down things. And his nuances: having the stats, having the data to be able to back up some of the things that you’re saying. So when I had this season one with JJ, the one thing is that he was always super-duper-crazy prepared. And it makes sense why he is the coach that he is now.

My one year that I’ve had with him so far, you see how incredibly prepared he is. It doesn’t matter if it’s broadcasting [or] if it’s podcasting or coaching. You could see it all translate to one another where it comes to being prepared — the preparation that he takes into it. You can learn from that in any field, it doesn’t have to be sports. It could be anything in life, just being prepared. And I think that gets you so much further along the curve than not being prepared.

Interestingly, Redick was LeBron’s co-host on the Mind The Game podcast just months before he took over in Los Angeles. The King was able to observe him up close even before he became his coach, confirming the former Clipper’s reputation as a stickler for details. However, the only thing left to do is improve in 2025-26, as the franchise has never been known for its patience.
