It’s a certainty that the Spurs will be even better next season, but it remains to be seen how they plan to strengthen. With the second pick of the draft, or with a trade for Kevin Durant? Legend Bruce Bowen made up his mind in a recent interview.

To win NBA titles, especially over the long term, a team needs players who are committed and loyal. In the 2000s, for example, behind its magical quartet, San Antonio could count on the presence of Bruce Bowen to make a difference in the heat of the moment. His thing was to defend hard and punish from behind the arc.

If the Spurs want to get back to the top with Victor Wembanyama, they’re going to have to find their Bruce Bowen, a player capable of sacrificing himself for the good of the team. Perhaps that player is already on the roster, as Jeremy Sochan is spending his summer working on his outside shot. It remains to be seen whether he will be traded before the start of the season.

Bruce Bowen has it out for Spurs

The number 1 objective in Texas is to recruit a third star to back up the young pivot of the French team and De’Aaron Fox. Kevin Durant’s name is being bandied about, and he would like to come, but the directors are waiting for a better opportunity. As a guest on journalist Bomani Jones’ podcast, Bruce Bowen spoke about these issues.

I don’t think NBA teams have to go out and get Kevin Durant yet. I think he’s still in the league at nearly 37 because he likes the light. That’s what he’s all about. At this age, he shouldn’t be getting 30 minutes a game. I think there are too many players clinging to their place in the league, and that’s one less opportunity for the youngsters. If he’s injured so often, it’s because he shouldn’t be playing at this level.

The Spurs must keep the second pick of the draft and select Dylan Harper. The question doesn’t even arise. I’m close to his father, and he can’t stop talking to me about the Spurs culture and the impact it will have on his son’s professionalism. He’s going to learn a lot in San Antonio. With De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama, he’ll have no pressure.

Bruce Bowen, a three-time champion with San Antonio, knows the franchise inside out, how it works and its culture. And in his opinion, recruiting Kevin Durant would not be a good idea, given the latter’s age and lack of availability. If he were in charge, he would keep the second pick in the draft to give Dylan Harper, touted as a young prodigy, a chance.
