Returning to the WNBA this season, Marine Johannès remains one of the biggest names in French women’s basketball. Gabby Williams, however, revealed that the point guard’s initial aspirations were much more modest than New York…

She was missed by the WNBA last year, having played last season in Turkey. It must be said that Marine Johannès had made herself very popular with fans during her first stints with the New York Liberty, igniting the crowd with her spectacular plays. Fortunately, she is back, as the former ASVEL player has decided to skip Eurobasket in order to remain in the United States.

A WNBA finalist during her final season in Gotham in 2023, the Frenchwoman has rediscovered her role off the bench. While she doesn’t stand out statistically (5.6 points average on 38% shooting), she wasted no time in being praised again by her teammates, starting with superstar Sabrina Ionescu. Not surprising since she still delivers high-class plays, like this laser pass:

Gabby Williams admires Marine Johannès’ career path

Still as magical with the ball in hand, MJ23 continues to embody the perfect showcase for a booming French women’s basketball scene, with prodigy Dominique Malonga having been drafted second overall a few weeks ago. In Seattle, Gabby Williams is impressed by her compatriot’s career, even though she had ambitions far removed from the WNBA when she started out on the court:

(via The Daily Dunk): Like I said, we have a lot of French players in the league now. And so I think it’s super important for a French player, a young player, to see someone like her in the league to see that it’s possible. I know that for Marine, her dream was just to play in Mondeville (in Normandy where she’s from, editor’s note).

It was her dream to be a professional player in Mondeville and look where she is now, she’s with the biggest franchise in the world. So just seeing someone like you or someone in the league, I think it’s important.

Not a bad career at all indeed, and we hope it’s not over yet.
