In recent years, it’s become quite difficult to explain in concrete terms what makes a player a superstar. Having played this role his entire career, Magic Johnson decided to describe it in as much detail as possible.

Publicité

What is a superstar? These days, it’s become difficult to give an exact answer to this question. It’s fine for fans, but even the media struggle to definitively define the term. Some journalists, for example, believe that Kevin Durant no longer deserves the term, even though we’re talking about a former MVP, two-time NBA champion, and one of the greatest scorers of all time.

Now, to find out what makes you a superstar, you might as well ask someone who knows what they’re talking about. From his first season in the league, Magic Johnson took on this role in a Lakers jersey by creating Showtime in Los Angeles. A recent guest on the show First Take, he wanted to outline the conditions for being considered as such:

Magic Johnson gives the recipe for becoming a superstar

A person who can go on the road and sell the building. Simple. I’m going to see that person… You gotta be box office. A superstar gotta say, man, or you’re running home from the office and saying, oh, I gotta see him on TV. Larry Bird, people running home, Shaq, people running home, Kobe, people running home.

And then of course, the greatest that has ever played, Michael Jordan, people going, running home to see him, or they’re trying their best to get into the arena to see that brother play. That’s a superstar who could go on the road and sell the building now.

Last but not least according to Magic, the ability to lead a team to a NBA title:

Publicité

Superstar player, they gotta lead you to the championship. And it’s gotta mean so much to them. It’s gotta be painful. It’s gotta hurt, you know? And so a superstar is a guy who makes his teammates better. It’s not just getting yours, but how do you also inspire the other guys to bring them up to a level? That’s a superstar to me. That makes an impact on that team, in that locker room, in that city.

Put like that, it seems easier to determine which player deserves to be treated like a superstar and which doesn’t. And yet, the debate is currently raging around Turese Haliburton and even… Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was nevertheless voted regular season MVP a few days ago. Perhaps Game 7 of the Finals, which will take place on Sunday evening, will finally allow us to settle the matter regarding both of them.
