Back in the United States after a much-discussed stay in China, Victor Wembanyama took the opportunity to talk about his daily life in his adopted country. And if he is to be believed, life here is very different from what he knew in France.
Will he take part in the Euro, after his NBA season was brought to an early end by a venous thrombosis in his right shoulder? The question is still being asked, even in the offices of the federation and in the mind of its coach, Freddy Fauthoux. In fact, Victor Wembanyama himself is yet to know the answer, and is still awaiting the opinion of the Spurs doctors.
In the meantime, the young French inside player is taking advantage of his off-season to recharge his batteries, but not necessarily in the most traditional way. So, instead of heading for a heavenly destination or returning home, he recently made a stopover… in China. A way for him to learn from monks and enjoy a unique experience in many ways, before returning to the hustle and bustle of the USA in recent hours.
Victor Wembanyama shares his thoughts on the United States
Once his spiritual retreat was over, Wembanyama didn’t choose to return to San Antonio, but made a stopover in New York this Saturday. Invited to take part in the traditional Fanatics Fest held there, he answered a few questions on The Shop podcast, recorded on site for the occasion. In particular, he answered a question about the United States, about which he was very complimentary:
Victor Wembanyama: Life in the United States has lived up to all my expectations, and then some. Coming from Europe, I realized that in France it’s not the same. Basketball isn’t as popular and developed as it is here. In fact, there’s no better country than the United States to make a living as an athlete. By far.
That was all it took to fire up the crowd of American fans gathered in front of him.
That said, Wemby’s move across the Atlantic has not been without its difficulties. He confesses to feeling a certain homesickness, without seeking the pity of the general public:
Victor Wembanyama: Of course, it’s not easy being away from my family on a daily basis. My life is different from that of American top prospects, but hey, I have the best life possible! I’m very happy about that, and I know that this sacrifice on the family front is well worth it.
As you can see, the French international has no regrets about his decision to pursue his career in the USA. After all, every summer is an opportunity for him to be reunited with members of his family, as could be the case in a month’s time, when the French national team begins its preparations for the Euros.
