A wind of change is quietly blowing through San Antonio, far from the spotlight and big trades. Behind the scenes, the franchise is discreetly preparing a new era. While some eyes turn to the stars, the Spurs are betting on strategic and meticulous reinforcement. The arrival of a key figure behind the scenes could change the game.
The San Antonio Spurs continue their ambitious transformation to become a competitive NBA franchise again. After missing out on signing Kevin Durant, the team is now focusing on long-term development around its young players, notably Victor Wembanyama. This ambition also involves strengthening the coaching staff, with the arrival of an experienced new coach. Sean Sweeney, an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, is joining the Spurs to take on a key role.
Sean Sweeney has accepted a contract to become the Spurs’ associate head coach under Mitch Johnson, announced Shams Charania. A trusted lieutenant of Jason Kidd, Sweeney has interviewed for several head coaching positions in recent years. This new role marks an important step forward in his career.
A solid reinforcement for the Spurs… on the bench!
Shams Charania : “Dallas Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney has agreed on a deal to become the associate head coach of the San Antonio Spurs under Mitch Johnson, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports tells ESPN. Sweeney has interviewed for coaching jobs in recent years and now departs Mavs for elevated role.”
Renowned journalist Tim MacMahon also points out the significant loss this departure represents for Dallas:
“Big loss for the Mavs. Sean Sweeney has been Jason Kidd’s right-hand man at each stop of his head coaching career. Coordinated offense and defense in Dallas.”
His departure leaves a difficult void to fill for the Texans.
Sweeney’s arrival in San Antonio comes as the franchise failed to close the trade for Kevin Durant, who is now with the Houston Rockets. The Spurs prefer to be patient for now and build around their young core rather than making a costly move.
The hiring of Sean Sweeney fits into this overall strategy: strengthening the club’s foundations to support the development of young talents like Wembanyama. San Antonio is relying on rigorous work and long-term coherence, both on the court and behind the scenes. And in a few days, Dylan Harper is expected to join this program as well.
