The Thunder were one of the youngest teams in the league, yet Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates won the title. They celebrated in style, and at the age of 24, Jalen Williams even agreed to drink for the first time.
After a near-perfect season, Oklahoma City got the job done in a Game 7 that fans won’t soon forget. The Thunder finished the regular season with the best record in the league, the MVP in the person of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and, despite expectations, they beat all the odds on the way to the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Now the hard part begins.
Not since the Warriors in 2017 and 2018, when Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry terrorized their opponents, has a team managed a back-to-back. While Mark Daigneault has a top-quality squad at his disposal, he will have to face competition over-motivated by the idea of taking down the champions. What’s more, every serious team will have strengthened by the start of the new season.
Jalen Williams talks about her first drunken evening
Because the future is uncertain in this league, it’s important to enjoy this coronation and the celebrations with the fans. No player knows when he’ll be back on top, and Jalen Williams understands this perfectly, which is why he let loose after his victorious Game 7. Speaking to ESPN, he recalled the first alcoholic evening of his life:
We did all the things people can think of when you talk about celebrating a title. So I’ll let people imagine our evening. Last night was the first time in my life I’d had a drop of alcohol. I’d never cracked before. But at the start of the season, my team-mates had it in their heads to get me drunk, I don’t really know why.
Right from the start, I set the tone by telling them that if we won the title, I’d go drinking with them and do whatever they wanted. Whether it’s drinking champagne or doing shots. When I realized we were getting close during the season, I had to prepare myself psychologically. I drank a little, I had a few shots, champagne, a beer, but it was all disgusting. I’m going to continue with my non-alcoholic cocktails.
At the age of 24, Jalen Williams has just had the first alcoholic evening of his life, and it clearly wasn’t his best experience. It has to be said that he started off with the hardest of shots, the fault of team-mates who had been waiting for him since the start of the season. And what if seeing the young All-Star drunk had been an extra motivation?
