With the season officially over with the Thunder’s coronation, it’s time to look back at the highlights of the last few months. For example, during his appearance on Jeff Teague’s podcast, Adam Silver spoke one last time about Luka Doncic’s arrival at the Lakers.

This Sunday, for the first time in their young history, the Oklahoma City Thunder lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy. A richly deserved coronation after a regular season concluded with the league’s best record and with the MVP in its ranks. But things move fast in the NBA, so while SGA and his partners are celebrating, the other franchises are thinking about what’s next.

In a few days’ time, the traditional draft will take place, and it could be the scene of some big moves. The Spurs’ No. 2 pick, for example, is the target of much interest, as the franchise could use it to recruit a star and back up Victor Wembanyama. Every manager needs to prepare the next few days meticulously.

Adam Silver reflects on Luka Doncic’s departure

But before we officially turn the page on this 2024-2025 season, there’s still time to look back at the most memorable moments. Without question, the year was marked by the departure of Luka Dončić in the direction of Los Angeles, when he seemed untouchable with the Mavericks. Live from New York, Adam Silver reflected on this earthquake.

People have this idea in their head that I can cancel a trade. The role of the league, with the cap and rules, is just to make sure everything is legal. Both teams have to call our offices to have the lawyers validate the contracts. When both teams do this in secret, I only find out about the trade a few hours before the public.

I’m a fan, like a lot of people. And teams don’t usually call my office for sports advice on what trades to make or not. So the fan in me was shocked about Luka Doncic. It wasn’t a trade that was in the rumor mill, that was being debated on every TV set. I was really surprised.

Adam Silver may be the league’s big boss, but even he had no idea that Luka Doncic had arrived in Los Angeles until the two teams called his office. And contrary to popular belief, he had no say in the matter, as long as the trade respected the rules in place. So, for a few hours, he had to keep a pretty heavy secret.
