While rumors seem to indicate that San Antonio is gradually moving away from Giannis Antetokounmpo, the matter shouldn’t be dismissed for good. Their latest signing has been closely linked to the Milwaukee star for years.
With the Kevin Durant trade, a prime option has vanished for the Spurs. Not necessarily a terrible loss for them, however, since at nearly 37 years old, the Slim Reaper no longer fit the franchise’s vision of building a competitive team when Victor Wembanyama is in his prime. The forward is therefore already too old.
Among the biggest stars still subject to transfer rumors, Giannis Antetokounmpo therefore seems like an obvious choice. Fans dream of a frontcourt in which the Greek Freak and the Alien would sow terror among their opponents, especially since Wemby’s ability to move away from the basket fits perfectly with that of the 2021 champion to destroy everything under the rim. On paper, it was therefore intriguing.
Spurs’ new assistant is a friend of Giannis
Except that for the past few days, rumors have been suggesting that the arrival of the big man is not on the agenda. This contrasts, however, with the recent signing of Sean Sweeney as Mitch Johnson’s assistant coach. As Eric Salinas pointed out on his X account, he does indeed have a deep connection with Giannis:
This is a great move by the Spurs. Sean played a huge role in developing Giannis in Milwaukee ( both are still great friends). He has coached under Jason Kidd in Milwaukee, Brooklyn, and Dallas and Dwayne Casey in Detroit. He’s a well rounded coach who specializes in defensive aspects.
Integrating talent from another top-tier organization with the current staff will only strengthen the team’s overall approach. Did I say he’s great friends with Giannis?
A revelation that went unnoticed by many fans and which therefore rekindles the hype around a trade for The Alphabet in a few days:
@GiveMeSomeNasty: First thing I thought of when I saw the news was his ties to Giannis.
@edotensei_pooh: Giannis to SA let’s goooooo
@Chris_Rinaldi: There’s a bigger game being played here. I’m not sweating Durant and still stuck on Giannis. Giannis will be on the Spurs… Inevitably.
