With his draft coming up in a few hours, Cooper Flagg is being compared to some of the greatest players in history. Kendrick Perkins even went so far as to call him a fusion of LeBron James and another Hall of Famer.
We’re talking about the youngest first pick in the draft since LeBron James. While he won’t turn 19 until December, Cooper Flagg seems destined to be Adam Silver’s first choice on June 26. This could be logical, given that the Duke big man can do practically everything on the court, and given his young age, his room for improvement seems colossal. Enough to make him the perfect prospect for Dallas.
That said, he’s going to have to face enormous pressure. Many hope he embodies the revival of American basketball and becomes Victor Wembanyama’s next rival. The hype surrounding him is so crazy, too, because he’s regularly lumped in with superstars…
Kendrick Perkins gets fired up about Cooper Flagg
On ESPN, Kendrick Perkins even went very (too?) far in discussing Flagg’s potential, comparing him to two of basketball’s greatest legends:
This is how I look at Cooper Flagg: If LeBron James and Kevin Garnett had a baby, you’d get Cooper Flagg.
When you think about LeBron James, you think of a complete basketball player. He led the team in everything. That’s a LeBron James type of thing. When you talk about his passion, his tenacity, I’m watching KG. He plays at a high level. We don’t give players like Cooper Flagg enough credit. I think it’s a skill to have a high motor like he has.
The all-around nature of the big man is fine, but otherwise, Perkins’ analysis isn’t exactly the most accurate. If only because, athletically speaking, Flagg is light years behind his predecessors. So, another comparison would surely have been much more appropriate…
@DP0YS: We just get on television and say anything huh
@Lebronin1: Please get him off tv
@JerichoXVI: Big Perk the king of hyperbole. Can we at least see him play 1 game before we elect him to the HOF big guy?
