Victor Wembanyama’s season ended prematurely due to a venous thrombosis, but he has still not been able to resume full training. However, he is able to travel, as demonstrated by his visit to China. RC Buford, Spurs’ chairman, spoke about this escapade.

Although results have not necessarily been up to scratch since the gradual departures of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, San Antonio retains the image of a franchise that works well. And this DNA is what the directors want to use to build their project around Victor Wembanyama. The latter may be ahead of schedule, but the Spurs aren’t going to rush things.

That’s why they finally decided against Kevin Durant. The Suns were undoubtedly too greedy in negotiations, especially for a player approaching 37, so the Texans will wait for the next big opportunity, as they did for De’Aaron Fox. Wemby is only 21, so he has time to reach the top.

RC Buford talks about Wembanyama’s vacations

Perhaps that’s why the Frenchman seems to have carte blanche at the moment. This summer, while other superstars are already in the gym working on their game, Victor Wembanyama took a detour to China to lock himself away in a temple with monks. Speaking to L’Equipe, Spurs president RC Buford had this to say about the situation.

“He’s a unique person. Not just as a player, but as a person. So no, I’m not surprised that he wants to challenge himself in spheres that I think are incredible opportunities for his personal development. It makes you want to try! But I’m not sure I can. The level of discipline, the ability to stay alone with your thoughts, while facing daily physical trials: it’s impressive.”

“Since his shoulder injury in February, Wembanyama has remained discreet about his state of health. The whole process he has to go through to recover is moving in the right direction. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t go into details. But everything is progressing as planned and as we’d hoped. The return to collective training? I think we’re very close to that, yes. Even if I don’t know the exact timing.”

Victor Wembanyama quickly showed his managers that he was not just another young man, that he needed to be intellectually stimulated to feel perfectly happy and balanced. So it came as no surprise to RC Buford to see his prodigy locked away for two weeks with monks in China. As long as his level doesn’t vary on the pitch.
