Since his arrival in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama has inherited several nicknames, ranging from the simple “Wemby” to the more symbolic “Alien”. But according to Stephon Castle, the Frenchman has inherited another, wackier nickname in the Spurs locker room.
American fans didn’t wait for his arrival in the league to discover his talent. A true international phenomenon since his teenage years, Victor Wembanyama arrived in the NBA with a well-established reputation. So much so, in fact, that most of the league’s superstars had already spoken out about him before he was selected first overall in the 2023 Draft by San Antonio.
But it’s not easy for them, or even for casual observers, to pronounce his name in the USA. So some have made it easy for themselves by simply calling him “Wemby” or “Vic”. Others have racked their brains a bit more and tried to think of nicknames that might suit him. In particular, “The Alien” met with great success, while a more… original one was adopted by Spurs.
Victor Wembanyama’s funny nickname taken up by Spurs
Stephon Castle joined the Texan franchise last year, and since then has formed a highly promising duo with Wembanyama. In the last few hours, however, it wasn’t his team-mate but content creator FaZe Adapt who joined him on a Twitch live stream. This was an opportunity for him to reveal the nickname used by his team to refer to the French inside player, a creation of YouTuber FlightReacts :
FaZe Adapt: “NBA players know Flight. The stuff he says in his streams always ends up being repeated in the locker room, right?”
Stephon Castle: “For sure. Guys talk about it all the time on the team. Like, you know he calls Wemby ‘WetBananas’? Well, sometimes we call him that too.”
Popular for many years in the US, FlightReacts has made a name for himself thanks to his videos in which he reacts to NBA highlights. And while he’s always had a penchant for the Warriors and Stephen Curry, he’s also been known to comment on Wemby’s exploits. And not by using this ultra-popular pseudonym, but rather that of… “WetBananas”.
And it would appear that this invention has met with some success within the league, or more precisely within the ranks of the Spurs. In any case, Castle assures us that some members of the roster have adopted this strange appellation to designate the French international. Not that this is likely to upset the main player, who may after all see it as a sign of affection on the part of his partners.
