Victor Wembanyama has been in the news in recent weeks, participating in a physical and spiritual retreat at a temple in China. LeBron James followed this, and gave his opinion on this unique experience. The King congratulates the initiative.
Victor Wembanyama’s playoff dreams were cut short by a venous thrombosis just days after his first All-Star Game. His season came to a premature halt, and he didn’t have time to achieve all his goals, which inevitably strengthened his determination to blow up everything in his path in the future.
Still limited in his training, Wemby had to find alternatives to progress and get back to his best. As is well known, he spent the early part of the summer at a temple in China, where he trained daily with monks. Proof of his total commitment, he even agreed to cut his hair, as tradition dictates.
LeBron James talks about Victor Wembanyama’s trip to China
On his return to the United States, the subject was obviously on everyone’s lips, particularly during his appearance at New York’s Fanatics Fest. Invited on LeBron James’ show “The Shop”, the Spurs prodigy spoke about his trip, and received a heartfelt comment from the King. The latter congratulates the initiative and recognizes the importance of good preparation.
“For me, the off-season is about building something that leads to titles. That’s where the achievements you’re looking for during the season come from. I never wanted to put myself in a position where I started the first game without being totally ready. I’ve always used the off-season to criticize my game, more than anyone else. There’s no one better at criticizing my game and my preparation than me.”
“The point of the off-season is to update your tools, to be out of your comfort zone, like Wemby was on his trip to China. He’s never been so disoriented, and that’s great for him. He has to learn to be comfortable in discomfort. I’ve had memorable seasons because of my preparation, and even when I’ve lost Finals, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t ready.”
LeBron James will begin his 23ᵉ season this fall, a record in NBA history. And this figure he didn’t reach by chance, it’s the fruit of meticulous preparation every summer. He perfectly understands Victor Wembanyama’s desire to live in this temple in China, since it’s by becoming comfortable in discomfort that one passes milestones.
