While Dylan Harper was the Spurs’ choice for the second pick in the draft, he wasn’t the one who garnered the most attention from his family. Not even his father, former NBA player Ron Harper… In fact, the prize goes to his mother.
On draft night, it’s not just the players who show up who can create a buzz. While they can stand out with their outfits or their reactions to being selected, their loved ones sometimes make even more headlines. For example, Eve Wembanyama, Victor’s older sister, made a huge hit on social media when the center was selected by the Spurs in 2023.
Two years later, another San Antonio player experienced a similar situation. Dylan Harper, who had a promising career at Rutgers, had been rumored to be in San Antonio for a while, and that’s indeed what happened, with the franchise selecting him second overall. But the guard didn’t generate as much buzz as… his mother:

More than her son, it was Maria Harper who literally set social media ablaze. As a reminder, Dylan is also the son of Ron Harper, a former NBA scoring powerhouse who went on to become a defensive pit bull with Michael Jordan’s Bulls… but it was the matriarch’s perfect genetics that turned fans’ heads:

With this interlude over, the young woman’s offspring will be able to focus on his NBA debut. We don’t really know what they’ll look like, since coach Mitch Johnson now has to decide who will accompany De’Aaron Fox in the starting five, since we shouldn’t forget Stephon Castle, who is the reigning Rookie of the Year. But in the long run, it’s hard not to see Harper becoming a solid second in command to Wembanyama.
