It’s not yet known whether Giannis Antetokounmpo will leave the Bucks, but the news should be out in the next few weeks. And for this renowned insider, the upcoming lottery could change the game and benefit… the Spurs.
No doubt disappointed by the turn of events, Giannis Antetokounmpo will be reflecting on his future very soon. Nothing surprising there after a rather difficult campaign with the Bucks. Doc Rivers is still the subject of much debate as a coach, and Damian Lillard’s injury didn’t help matters, with a first-round playoff exit to boot.
Knowing that Lillard will be out of action for a while and could miss almost the whole of next season, it’s safe to assume that the Bucks will no longer be contenders. There’s that, but also the completely botched trade of Kyle Kuzma, who brought nothing to Wisconsin. An abject failure on the part of the front office.
Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the Bucks?
So questions are inevitably being asked about the future of Giannis, who has always explained that he wants to play for an ambitious and competitive franchise. He will be discussing the situation with his managers shortly, but many fans believe that his departure is a foregone conclusion. What if he were to join the Spurs with Victor Wembanyama?
According to some media outlets, this is a scenario that should not be ruled out in the coming months. Brian Windhorst, in a broadcast for ESPN, is convinced. He even thinks that the upcoming lottery could help San Antonio accumulate assets and make the Bucks a better offer. However, they’re not the only ones in this scenario.
Brian Windhorst: “I want to mention two franchises in the Giannis file: the Rockets and the Spurs. Both have a lottery pick. As far as the Spurs are concerned, they even have two picks, but only 30% of being in the top 4. And if that happens? San Antonio could end up with Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and a pick that could change everything.”
We already know that the Spurs will be ambitious, all the more so after a playoff-less campaign and struggling without Victor Wembanyama. Giannis is a possible name, as is Kevin Durant, who will leave the Suns over the summer. It remains to be seen whether San Antonio is prepared to go all out to hit the market hard.
