Giannis Antetokounmpo could certainly leave the Bucks in the coming weeks, while the Spurs are rumored to be trying to snatch him back. But what might this trade look like? The latest suggestion is far from pleasant.
After being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs and Damian Lillard’s long and serious injury, the future looks very bleak for the Bucks. The franchise isn’t dreaming, and certain decisions are coming back to haunt them, like taking Doc Rivers on as coach or trading Kyle Kuzma at the last deadline. And that’s starting to add up.
Does Milwaukee still have a real chance of winning the title when you look at the competition? Many think not today, and Giannis may be one of them. He’ll be meeting his managers in a few days’ time to take stock of the situation, but fans are obviously concerned, especially given his highly competitive mentality and his desire to win another title.
A proposed trade between Spurs and Bucks annoys fans
But while some already see Giannis arriving in San Antonio, John Hollinger had some fun imagining a possible trade between the two franchises. If the Spurs pull it off, what will they have to send to Wisconsin to convince them? Well, unsurprisingly, they’ll have to give up a lot of assets to do so.
John Hollinger : “The Bucks could look in two places for a partner with San Antonio and Toronto. No, Bucks fans, you won’t get Victor Wembanyama against Giannis. But you might get Stephon Castle. The Spurs have two picks in the lottery in 2025 (their own and Atlanta’s), an unprotected first rounder in 2027 and other trades, plus their picks for 2029 and 2031. Keldon Johnson and Harrison Barnes could fill in with their salaries.”
Include Castle in this possible trade? Didn’t like it one bit.
@ReubenFlorez : “No way the Spurs would trade Castle!”
@DaveIV82 : “I like Giannis a lot, but I love what we’re building with the two ROTYs in a row.”
@ElScorchoLara : “That’s a no for Castle. He’s untouchable. I’d love to have Giannis, but we don’t need him that badly.”
Whether we’re talking about Kevin Durant or Giannis after all, the problem isn’t really in recruiting them. It’s mainly the quid pro quo that raises questions, and for everyone in San Antonio, it seems clear that Stephon Castle shouldn’t be part of any potential swap. We imagine the Spurs approve.
