With Gregg Popovich in another role, it didn’t take long for the Spurs to reveal the identity of their new coach. The franchise has decided to put its faith in Mitch Johnson, but fans can’t say they’re convinced.

We’ve suspected it for some time, but now it’s official: Gregg Popovich will not be returning to the Spurs bench as head coach. His health no longer allows him to take on such a task, especially with the pressure, travel and all that goes with it. He has therefore decided to change his position, leaving the way open for someone else to guide this group.

While some fans were already dreaming of Mike Malone or another coach, it wasn’t long before we learned the identity of the new coach: Mitch Johnson. The latter was already the coach this season, but only in an interim capacity, which means he’s been promoted. A decision based on organizational continuity.

Spurs’ decision annoys fans

The problem is that the reaction to this news has been overwhelmingly negative. The coach showed many shortcomings last season, with questionable rotations, a Stephon Castle sometimes punished for nothing and a sometimes average ability to adjust. The Spurs may have been hoping for joy, but the opposite was true.

@JessePerez8888 : “We could have had Malone, Brown, Budenholzer or maybe Becky Hammon, but you pick that? It’s not possible.”

@GreggPopowich : “If we hire Mitch Johnson I’ll never watch basketball again.”

@CookedByPayne : “But is he even good?”

A very cold reception for the coach, far from convincing with his season on the Spurs bench to replace Popovich.

@spurs_four : “The fact that Mitch Johnson was bad last year was one of the few things where the whole fanbase agreed, and now we decide to make him our head coach.”

Johnson did have some extenuating circumstances with what happened to Popovich, taking on the role overnight, the Victor Wembanyama case, a still-unbalanced roster and the rest. Suffice to say, fans will be scrutinizing him a lot next season, some believing it’s not a good decision.

Perhaps time will prove the Spurs right, but for now, it’s a widely hated decision. Johnson will have a lot of convincing to do from September onwards.
