After several weeks of discussions and rumors, Luka Doncic’s extension with the Lakers seems to be on track. What remains to be seen is the date and terms of the deal. And it’s fair to say that there’s work to be done, even if the Angelinos are prepared to do anything.
Knowing that the Lakers gave up Anthony Davis to get him, you can imagine that the franchise is ready to do anything to retain Luka Doncic. Losing him to the open market in the future would be a terrible thing, so Rob Pelinka should do whatever it takes to satisfy the Slovenian’s wants and needs. Even snubbing LeBron James completely if necessary.
Doncic is the future of the Angelinos, and could technically spend the rest of his career with the Californian franchise. He has already said he is very happy in Los Angeles and wants to show his loyalty. And it couldn’t be simpler: all he has to do is sign a contract extension this summer to reassure his managers and fans alike.
What contract for Luka Doncic?
And let’s just say it’s not a foregone conclusion. According to ESPN, Doncic is likely to stall a little to take his time. This doesn’t mean he’s planning to leave the City of Angels, but he could wait quietly to see what moves the front office makes. But still according to ESPN, the Lakers are ready to offer him anything.
ESPN : “Depending on Dončić’s preference, he has multiple pathways to his next contract. Beginning on Aug. 2, he can sign a four-year, $229 million extension. To recoup the money he lost in the trade from losing his supermax eligibility, Dončić could sign a shorter three-year, $165 million extension, with a player option for 2028-29 that would coincide with reaching 10 years of service to be eligible for the 35 percent max.”
“In that scenario, he could sign a five-year, $418 million deal in the 2028 offseason. Dončić also could choose to play out his contract, opt out after 2025-26 and then re-sign for five years, $296 million, or sign with another team for four years, $219 million. According to team sources, the Lakers will be amenable to whatever contract structure Dončić desires..”
This is very clear for Doncic, who will be able to count on the Lakers’ support regarding his future choice. For as we can see, there are several avenues open to the Slovenian, who could opt to maximize his future salary and sign a hell of a deal for 2028. Whatever happens, a departure from Los Angeles seems unlikely given his happiness.
