While Giannis Antetokounmpo is due to meet his managers shortly to discuss his future, the player is rumored to be interested in potentially joining a major franchise. Except that an old statement contradicts this.
Will you go? Will he not? It’s hard to say with any certainty what the future holds for Giannis Antetokounmpo today. We can imagine that the disappointment is real after being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, especially as Damian Lillard’s injury changes the game for next year. Milwaukee’s future doesn’t look great at the moment.
That’s a problem when you have a player like Giannis on your roster. A player who clearly wants to win a second championship in his career and wants to play in a competitive roster. He could certainly ask for his trade within the next few weeks, but there’s some debate to consider his next NBA destination.
Fans disagree with recent Giannis rumor
While he wants to keep on winning, the Greek Freak is said to have a preference for the big NBA markets, such as Los Angeles or potentially New York. At least, that’s what Howard Beck is saying, who believes that Giannis will be aiming high if he leaves. A rumor that would be rather bad for the Spurs, who would be snubbed from the race in this precise case.
It didn’t take long for the statement to cause a stir, so much so that many fans disagreed. As far as they’re concerned, the Spurs are still in the running, and we’re willing to believe them. A few years ago, Giannis told Marc Stein a very different story. Playing in a small market, as long as he can win the title, doesn’t bother him at all.
Giannis Antetokounmpo : “I don’t like flashy cities like Los Angeles or Miami. I don’t know if I could stay the same player in such cities.”
An old statement for Giannis, and one that speaks volumes about the latest rumor concerning him. The truth is that the Spurs are still on the agenda, as are the Rockets. But before we can consider the player’s future destination, we’ll need confirmation of his departure. According to Stein, the Bucks have no intention of trading their star unless they receive a direct request. And if that’s the case, the summer of 2025 in the NBA world will be very turbulent.
Note that San Antonio’s interest is not yet confirmed at this stage. But it’s doubtful that Giannis wouldn’t like to team up with Victor Wembanyama to form a formidable duo on the other side of the Atlantic.
