Thierry Henry, a legendary striker who turned soccer coach a few years ago, has obviously drawn inspiration from the methods of other great coaches. He admits to having sought advice from Gregg Popovich, particularly with regard to a certain Tony Parker.
His coaching prowess has long since extended beyond the boundaries of basketball. More than just an NBA icon, Gregg Popovich is a true role model for any top-level sports coach. His recent transition to the Spurs organization chart, after 29 years on the Texan bench, has not escaped the attention of tacticians the world over. And not even Thierry Henry.
Thierry Henry pays tribute to Gregg Popovich
A former star of the soccer world, Thierry Henry has been trying to achieve the same status as a coach for some years now. For the time being, his various experiences in this role have been rather mixed. In the meantime, the ex-French striker is a columnist on CBS Sports Golazo, where he discussed Gregg Popovich’s current situation:
Thierry Henry: I don’t know if you’ve seen, but Gregg Popovich has decided to end his tenure as coach of the San Antonio Spurs after 29 years. I was lucky enough to meet him with Tony Parker when I went there, and I was always well received. Coach Pop is a bit like the Sir Alex (Ferguson) of basketball, and now he’s going to step down and become president of basketball operations for the franchise.
After offering this bit of context to ordinary soccer fans who might not have heard of Coach Pop’s exploits, Henry went on to reveal the nature of his private exchanges with him:
Thierry Henry: I’ve never had the chance to thank him for the discussions I’ve had with him.
He gave me a lot of advice on how to be a leader and hold the keys to a team. We often talked about his management when Tim Duncan was the alpha male of the Spurs and Tony also reached a high level. I’d always ask him how he managed Tony, (Manu) Ginobili and Tim Duncan simultaneously. He was always available to talk.
Grateful to his American counterpart, “Titi” then concluded his tirade with a nice wink about his new identity:
Thierry Henry: He’s an great guy, and since he was wearing a T-shirt with that nickname the other day, I’d like to wish “El Jefe” all the best.
