Former Lakers player and coach Byron Scott is a well-known name in the NBA microcosm. But now he finds himself the target of some very serious accusations, with a complainant claiming to have been sexually assaulted by him.

Younger generations of fans will remember him as a coach, and not necessarily for the right reasons. Head of the Cavaliers team in the years following LeBron James’ departure, as well as of the Lakers during Kobe Bryant’s final seasons, Byron Scott nonetheless has some fine achievements to his name on the bench, including two Finals appearances as the New Jersey Nets’ head coach.

It’s fair to say that he’s very familiar with the latter, as he was a member of the Lakers’ famous Showtime team. While the names of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy may come to mind first, Scott was far from a nobody by their side. After all, we’re talking about a player who averaged almost 22 points per game during the 1987-88 season.

Byron Scott faces serious charges

A three-time NBA champion with the Purples and Ors, Scott is a true franchise legend. Which makes the recent accusations against him all the more grim… As revealed by the Daily Mail, the former player and coach was supposedly guilty of particularly serious acts during his time in Los Angeles:

LA Lakers legend Byron Scott has been accused of sexually assaulting a schoolgirl in a janitor’s closet when he was a young, married sporting star. Details of the case are included in explosive documents obtained by Daily Mail this week. The incident happened 38 years ago in a locked janitor’s closet at an exclusive private school in LA. It was the summer of 1987, and Scott was at the school for an event with the Lakers team, according to a verified amended complaint.

The plaintiff, Hayley Dylan, who was 15 at the time, has chosen to reveal her identity rather than remain anonymous. Shockingly, Scott, now 64, admits that he had sexual contact with the girl but says he thought she was 18. Scott’s attorney, Linda Bauermeister, told Daily Mail: “Our client is devastated by this complaint, a basketball event that took place in 1987.”

In the lawsuit, the now 53-year-old accuses the NBA superstar of sexual battery, sexual assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Dylan also names Campbell Hall School, where she was a student at the time and where the assault allegedly occurred, as a defendant for not protecting her from Scott.
