There’s no doubt that the Lakers will be chasing a pivot over the summer. But choices are limited and Rob Pelinka will have to be creative to help his team, with why not a trade. And an opportunity is possible in the West.
After an utter failure against the Timberwolves, it’s pretty clear that the Lakers need a true pivot to have any chance of winning the championship. That’s not to say that this post 5 will be useful in every series, but it will be necessary to limit the likes of Nikola Jokic and Rudy Gobert in the event of a showdown. And Jaxson Hayes isn’t enough.
The cancelled Mark Williams trade didn’t help the Lakers, so much so that some fans still don’t understand why Pelinka decided to do this. The front office will therefore have to find a solution this off-season with players like Myles Turner, Daniel Gafford, Brook Lopez or Nic Claxton, who is appreciated by some fans.
A trade in sight for the Lakers?
A free agency signing is possible, but it’s highly doubtful that the staff will find what they’re looking for. The franchise doesn’t really have any money, so to find a big player, it’ll have to be a trade. It just so happens that we need to look at the Mavericks today, with the thorny situation of Gafford, who is being followed by quite a few franchises.
The interior is going to want a big salary, and the Mavericks aren’t sure they’ll accept it. Along with Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively II, he forms a formidable sector in Dallas, but Gafford naturally wants the salary that goes with it. So, according to Tim MacMahon’s information, this is a soap opera to keep an eye on.
Tim MacMahon : “Dereck Lively is a year away from getting an extension, Daniel Gafford is entering the final year of his contract, Gafford reasonably and rightly wants to get starting center money. You can’t have AD on a max, Lively on a big contract and pay Gafford starting center money.”
No unlimited money for the Mavericks, who will have to make a choice to maintain a competitive interior sector. We know Davis will stay, but Lively and Gafford may have to fight for the last spot. This is a great opportunity for the Lakers, listed as suitors for the former Wizards pivot.
