While the summer of 2025 will be used to recruit a pivot, the Lakers also have big aspirations for 2026, potentially without LeBron James. So some fans already have a major 5 in mind… but it may come as a surprise.
Beaten in the first round of the playoffs, the Lakers aren’t really worried by this elimination. They obviously wanted to win the championship with Luka Doncic and LeBron James, but the fact is that the Slovenian’s trade also had a negative impact. The interior sector suffered a major loss with Anthony Davis and nobody replaced him on arrival, even partially.
That’s why the mission is simple for the Angelinos: recruit a pivot this off-season. We don’t yet know exactly who, but Pelinka and his staff have several leads. Naz Reid, Myles Turner, Daniel Gafford and Nic Claxton come to mind. Very affordable targets in the case of the latter two, although negotiating won’t be easy.
Which Lakers team for 2026?
Despite the urgency of the situation, that hasn’t stopped some fans from looking to the long term, including 2026 with Doncic more than ever firmly established in the City of Angels. Admittedly, it’s a nice dream for Lakers fans, but there’s no reason to believe that Kyrie Irving will land in 2026, just like Giannis Antetokounmpo, as the Angelinos don’t have the assets to negotiate with the Bucks. This isn’t the first time some people have gotten a little too carried away, but the reality for 2026 is likely to be very different.
