Although the Mavericks won the jackpot with the first pick of the draft, the Spurs are also the winners with the second pick. But the franchise will have to make an important decision in June.
Accused of rigging certain things for a long time, the NBA didn’t help its case this Monday night with the Mavericks’ lottery win. The franchise, responsible for the Luka Doncic trade to the Lakers and which only had a 1.8% chance of winning, just took the first pick in the draft. So it’s hard for some fans not to blame Adam Silver in the aftermath.
Dallas reaps the rewards of criticism, while San Antonio fares rather well. After Victor Wembanyama with the first pick and Stephon Castle in the top 4, the Texas franchise now has the second pick of the 2025 draft. This is excellent news for San Antonio, who had nevertheless finished in the last places in the Western Conference.
Cornelian choice in sight for Spurs
That’s why this Texans spot is a little less surprising. But it’s a rich pickings approaching for the Spurs, as Cooper Flagg isn’t the only big talent in this crop, with Dylan Harper already heralded as a future All-Star. The problem? We’re talking about a young player and, above all, a point guard/fullback, which raises important debates.
Knowing that San Antonio has Castle and drafted De’Aaron Fox, does Harper’s arrival make sense? Probably not. But given his talent, the franchise could also regret missing out. The Spurs could also use this valuable pick to send him to the Bucks in exchange for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Is now the right time to get Giannis back? Many think so, especially as he’s in his prime and would allow the Spurs to make a real leap forward in the Western Conference, especially alongside Victor Wembanyama. Others think it’s wiser to choose Harper. Whatever happens, the Spurs have a choice to make, and not an easy one.
