Two years after selecting Victor Wembanyama and 12 months after Stephon Castle arrived in Texas, the Spurs were lucky once again. They inherited the second pick of the 2025 Draft, which didn’t fail to make coach Mitch Johnson react.
The Spurs are definitely in luck when it comes to the draft. Some will say that the NBA is secretly scheming to restore this franchise to its former glory, while others will simply speak of planets aligning. Indeed, since 2023 and the arrival of Victor Wembanyama, one of the most eagerly-awaited prospects in history, the good news just keeps on coming.
Last summer, with the fourth pick of this traditional ceremony, San Antonio’s leaders selected Stephon Castle, a player ready to contribute immediately and who eventually won the Rookie of the Year award. Alongside the French pivot and De’Aaron Fox, he seems to represent the future of the team, a cornerstone of the group that will make noise in the playoffs.
Mitch Johnson talks about Spurs’ good draft pick
And, as if that wasn’t enough, the Spurs received another great gift this Monday in the lottery for the next draft. They will be second on the clock, which should enable them to draft the second-best player of the draft behind Cooper Flagg. Coach Mitch Johnson was on hand to share his thoughts.
It was difficult for me to keep track of what was going on, because several teams found themselves propelled into the top 4. I understood that we were in the top 4, but I didn’t know with whom. We’re happy to have the second choice, but also the 14th. There are a lot of good players in this crop, with different profiles. We’re going to add two talents to our group, and with the second pick we’ll be able to be meticulous.
I don’t want to put any pressure on the player who joins us, this league is never easy, but when you have the opportunity to choose a player with the second pick, it means he has talent and can contribute immediately. I’ve got a good team, I’m already confident in it, but it’s exciting to be able to add someone.
The Spurs can smile as they drew a winning ticket on Monday. If they keep this pick, then they should welcome the talented Dylan Harper, a point guard capable of filling in for De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle. If they’re worried about clogging up the back lines, they could swap him for an established superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, rumored to be on his way out to Milwaukee. It’s a win-win in Texas.
