The upcoming summer promises to be eventful for the Celtics, who just lost Jayson Tatum for several months. And San Antonio could well take advantage of their setbacks, according to a league analyst… Is a major trade about to take place?

The season just got a little darker for the Celtics. Not only are they now down 3-1 against the Knicks, but they also just lost Jayson Tatum during Game 4. After putting on a tremendous performance so far, the forward was injured in the last minutes of the game, and the worst fears have since been confirmed: a torn right Achilles tendon and an expected absence of 8 to 12 months for the champion. A terrible blow…

Under these conditions, Boston’s chances of reaching the conference finals seem slim. But the Massachusetts franchise’s problems go much deeper than that, as the 2025 offseason is expected to be a turbulent one for the Green and Whites. As a reminder, they recently changed ownership… and that often means major internal upheaval.

Big moves on the horizon for the Celtics?

Among the new bosses’ main concerns will most likely be the team’s payroll, which is currently massive to say the least. Some of the league’s franchises could therefore take advantage of this opportunity to recruit among the Celtics’s players, with Marc J. Spears mentioning two candidates on ESPN’s Sportscenter:

Even before Tatum’s injury, in the first round, there was an NBA executive from another team that told that he expected major change with the Celtics, no matter what happened this season. You certainly expect such to be the case when you have a payroll where you have five players making at least 28 million dollars or more, two superstars who are making 50 million dollars or more.

I’ll tell you what, the two teams I’m keeping an eye on for a couple of these guys perhaps, one is the Houston Rockets. Why ? Ime Udoka is there, they’re certainly rumored to wanting to upgrade their roster, he knows these guys and it would be attractive to returning to play with him. And then another team is the San Antonio Spurs as well. They got the number two pick and I’m told the Spurs are quite happy with the talent that’s available at number two, but they are gonna explore a potential trade as well.

San Antonio has plenty of assets to pull off a massive trade, with an impressive number of draft picks and talented players (Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan, etc.). This could be an interesting negotiating partner for Boston, as stars like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis have been rumored to be leaving in recent weeks. Better watch out…
